Electric vs Gas Water Heater

What is the difference?

Electric Water Heaters

Use electricity to produce heat often through resistive heat (although hybrid heat pump water heaters exist).

Pros

Can cost less to install
No Venting needed

Cons

Recovery time is double gas equivalents (2hr vs 1hr)
220V required (wiring)
Higher cost of energy compared to a gas water heater

Gas Water Heaters

Use natural gas or propane to produce heat.

Pros

Recovery time is half electric equivalents (1hr vs 2hr)
No electricity required (if atmospheric vent)
Lower cost of energy compared to an electric water heater

Cons

Power vents cost more to install (more upfront), longer financial break even
Require running gas line if doesn’t already exist
Venting needed (Either PVC or Lined Chimney depending on type)
